It’s the greatest month of the year in Indianapolis! May is here, and there are activities all month long at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Before the checkered flag drops, you’ll have opportunities to attend qualifying, concerts, autograph sessions, and much more. Explore upcoming events below, and don’t forget to grab tickets for the 110th running of the Indy 500.

Indy 500 Practice & Qualifying, May 12-18

There’s no need to wait until the race to see the Indy 500 cars in action. Make plans to attend practice and qualifying days to enjoy the unmistakable sights and sounds only IMS can deliver. Here’s the practice and qualifying schedule:

  • May 12, Opening Day: Gates open 10 a.m.; Practice, 12-6 p.m.
  • May 13: Gates open 10 a.m.; Practice, 12-6 p.m.
  • May 14: Gates open 10 a.m.; Practice, 12-6 p.m.
  • May 15, Fast Friday: Gates open 10 a.m.; Practice, 12-6 p.m.; Qualification draw, 6:15 p.m. Note: Cars will have a turbocharger boost to reach qualifying speeds.
  • May 16, Qualifying: Gates open 8 a.m.; Practice: 8:30-9:30 a.m.; Qualifying: 11 a.m. to 5:50 p.m.
  • May 17, Qualifying: Gates open 10 a.m.; Practice for Top 12: 1-2 p.m.; Practice for Last Chance Qualifiers, 2-3 p.m.; Indy 500 Top 12 Qualifying, 4:05 p.m. to 5:05 p.m. (determines positions 7-12); Last Chance Qualifying, 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.; Firestone Fast Six, 6:25-6:55 p.m. (determines the pole winner and positions 1-6). Note: Last Chance practice and qualifying only if more than 33 cars are entered. 
  • May 18: Gates open 11 a.m.; Practice: 1-3 p.m.

Carb Day, Friday, May 22

One of the biggest parties of the year, Carb Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is almost as popular as the race itself. Fans enjoy live music, Indy 500 practice, the annual Pit Stop Competition, and a new fan favorite, the Oscar Mayer Wienie 500. Carb Day is a blast for fans and important for drivers, as it marks the final practice session before the race. 

Carb Day culminates in a musical celebration featuring the Counting Crows and SWITCHFOOT. Here’s the full schedule:

  • Gates open, 8 a.m.
  • Indy 500 practice, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Oscar Mayer Wienie 500, 2 p.m.
  • Pit Stop Challenge, 2:30-4 p.m.
  • Miller Lite Carb Day Concert, 4-6 p.m.; Concert gates open at 2 p.m.

Legends Day, Saturday, May 23

It’s the final day before the race, and a chance for fans to meet drivers both past and present. Highlights include autograph sessions with veteran drivers and this year’s full field of 33. Here’s the Legends Day Schedule:

  • Gates open, 8 a.m. (Garage area access until 3 p.m.)
  • Veteran driver autograph session wristband distribution, 8 a.m.; Notes: Distribution is in the Pagoda Plaza. Fans will line up for either autograph session A or B. Bronze Badge holders will be allowed entry at 7 a.m. to start the lines. Wristbands are limited to one per person. A total of 80 wristbands will be distributed per session.
  • Full field autograph session, 9-10 a.m. Note: Fans will line up for one table of three drivers. You will get autographs from all three. The number of fans per line is limited.
  • Public drivers meeting, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Veteran driver autograph session A, 12-1 p.m.
  • Veteran driver autograph session B, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
